Oklahoma 3 are re-indicted!
December 7th, 2007 by KathleenOklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson has re-indicted the Oklahoma 3—Paul Jacob, Rick Carpenter and Susan Johnson. His outrageous prosecution now continues, after the AG had, several weeks ago, quietly dismissed the grand jury indictment against the three.
Paul Jacob made the following statement regarding his re-indictment:
“This is absolutely the lousiest Christmas present I’ve ever received. But I’ve got stronger objections to this action than Edmondson’s holiday timing. While we endeavor to keep our sense of humor, there is nothing funny about the Attorney General’s politically-motivated prosecution. It is an effort to intimidate, to silence, not just me, but the people of Oklahoma. It is an attack against the initiative process itself. But the AG’s prosecution will not succeed. We’ll stand up against these bullying tactics and defend the fundamental right to petition one’s government.”
In the press thus far, Attorney General Edmondson has been hiding behind the multi-county grand jury’s indictment of the Oklahoma 3 to duck the recurrent charges that this is a politically motivated prosecution. Edmondson has sought to pretend that it wasn’t his decision to prosecute, but rather that of the grand jury. He even continued this dodge after the grand jury indictment was dismissed.
Now that Edmondson has re-indicted these three innocent citizens directly from his office, the charade is over. This is a political assault, under cover of law, plain and simple. An assault that, as Paul has stated, we will stand up to fight.
This should never happen in America. Let’s work together to make certain it doesn’t.
