Rep. Reynolds asks for special prosecutor to look into shady AG transactions
March 5th, 2008 by KathleenState Rep. Mike Reynolds (R-Oklahoma City) has asked Gov. Brad Henry to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate possible illegal transactions by Attorney General Drew Edmondson’s campaign committee.
Rep. Reynolds, one of the state lawmakers who attended the rally in support of the Oklahoma 3 preceding their reindictment in January, says that Edmondson made $1,900 of campaign contributions from his personal account but then reimbursed himself from his campaign account. That kind of “committee-to-committee” contribution is illegal, Reynolds said.
Reynolds had already registered the complaint with the state Ethics Commission, but his letter to the governor suggested that there may be a conflict of interest, because of a working relationship between the attorney general’s office and the Ethics Commission.
Edmondson told reporters that the Ethics Commission is “free from influence from any quarter.” He added, “It would be a waste of taxpayer money to pay another attorney to review what the Ethics Commission has already received.” Apparently, Edmondson would prefer to use those funds for his continued harassment of the Oklahoma 3.
A governor’s spokesman said that Henry doesn’t intend to name a special lawyer to look into the matter.
Edmondson has already had to reimburse his campaign fund $2,750 for purchasing tickets to campaign functions, which is not an approved campaign expense, after Rep. Reynold’s pointed out the illegal payments. Edmondson claimed that he had thought the expenses were allowable at the time he made them.
