An Independence Day message from Paul Jacob
July 4th, 2008 by DavidToday isn’t just July 4th; it is Independence Day. It celebrates the rhetorical shot heard ’round the world: the Declaration of Independence. The most powerful statement for individual liberties and against arbitrary government power in the history of the world.
And it matters still today, 232 years later. Because those words led to a nation in which power was strictly limited. The resultant freedom also enabled us to become the wealthiest society in the world.
Words can do all that? Yes and no. The words inspired, yes. But, no, it wasn’t words alone. It took real flesh-and-blood people to sacrifice, to fight, to stand up against tyranny. And we’re still doing it today.
There is much about which we should be mightily concerned. But I’m optimistic. Because our history is not forgotten and the desire for freedom is in no way diminished.
We have lots of work to do, but it can be done. It won’t be much fun for to face the outrageous charges in Oklahoma later this month and as the case progresses. But I’m confident that we will prevail and that by fighting this battle our freedoms will be enhanced and not restricted.
Some people wish every day were Christmas. Not me. I can’t afford that! No, I wish every day were Independence Day. Let’s raise a toast to that. And Monday go back to work to make it happen.
