Power-thirsty Edmondson looking for another fix

August 14th, 2008 by Kathleen

We knew it was just a matter of time before Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson was going to seek another fix for his power-addiction. Today’s Tulsa World reports that Edmondson confirmed Wednesday “that he is getting closer to deciding to run for governor in 2010.”

“I am leaning more and more in that direction,” said Edmondson, who has raised nearly $300,000 for a 2010 re-election bid.

If Edmondson decides to run for governor, money from his attorney general campaign could be transferred to a governor’s race.

We find it a bit scary that this dangerous man is seeking the highest office in Oklahoma. His consistent disregard for the rights of Oklahoma citizens makes him a very unqualified candidate. But we trust the citizens of Oklahoma will keep in mind his record of bullying folks and his opposition to term limits, petition rights, and the voter initiative process when they are marking their ballots. We predict an embarrassing defeat.

We were glad to see the Tulsa World article take notice of Edmondson’s recent fundraising from pre-paid legal outfits, along with glowing official press releases endorsing the companies’ services:

Executives and employees of Pre-Paid Legal Services were big contributors, according to Edmondson’s latest campaign report, accounting for more than $46,000 in donations.

Contributors from the Ada-based company donating the maximum $5,000 were executives Harland Stonecipher, Wilburn Smith, Jeff Olson, Brian Carruthers, Darnell Self, J.N. Serba and David Savula.

Many of the Pre-Paid contributions were made May 29, which Edmondson said was when the company held a fundraiser for him.

Shortly after the fundraiser, Edmondson’s office issued a news release praising prepaid plans for legal services.

The June 19 release did not mention the Oklahoma company by name but noted that such legal plans provide consumers with attorneys in time of need.

“Prepaid legal plans are just like car insurance,” Edmondson said in the release.”

The attorney general said Wednesday that he has consistently been a supporter of prepaid legal plans and that the release was not connected to the fundraiser.

Of course not…
