In third-party debate, Nader says Okla. is enforcing “Jim Crow laws”
October 29th, 2008 by KathleenDuring a recent Fair and Equal all-inclusive presidential debate broadcast on C-Span, Ralph Nader addressed the politically-motivated prosecution of the Oklahoma Three. When asked about laws that thwart ballot access for third party and independent candidates, and thus political speech, Nader pointed out that he had recently overturned Arizona’s residency law as unconstitutional (Nader v. Brewer, Ninth Circuit) and, in specifically citing the Oklahoma residency statute and the prosecution of the Oklahoma 3, he called such residency restrictions “Jim Crow laws,” adding, “We’ve seen this before against African Americans.”
You can view the video of the debate below. Nader begins his answer noting the Oklahoma Three prosecution beginning at 57 minutes and 43 seconds into the video. The debate was also attended by Chuck Baldwin, the presidential nominee of the Constitution Party.
